ESPN to stage the ultimate UFC weekend

Taken from the ESPN UK  Website

To celebrate literally the biggest sporting collision of the summer – the UFC 116 Heavyweight Title fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin – ESPN is giving fans the Ultimate UFC weekend.

ESPN Logo

From Thursday July 1 to Sunday July 4, both ESPN and ESPN HD will broadcast some of the greatest bouts in recent Octagon history, behind the scenes insights into UFC 116, the British television premiere of a bout which was immediately dubbed the greatest fight in mixed martial arts history, as well as the big one – UFC 116 – exclusively live from Las Vegas, USA.

The action begins at 10:00pm on Thursday 1st July on ESPN and ESPN HD, with ESPN’s groundbreaking magazine show, MMA Live.

In a series of shows broadcast throughout the Ultimate UFC Weekend, “Fights of the Night” will showcase the most exciting bouts from every UFC supershow from last year’s UFC 100 to UFC 115. Each Fight of the Night, chosen after each event by UFC president Dana White, will be screened in its entirety and the series will feature the likes of Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Anderson Silva, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira.

The “Best of British” will showcase the greatest recent Octagon performances from the UK’s home talent, including Michael ‘the Count’ Bisping, Dan ‘the Outlaw’ Hardy, Ross ‘the Real Deal’ Pearson and John ‘the Hitman’ Hathaway.

And, in a special treat for British fight fans, ESPN will present a bout which has already been dubbed not only a shoo-in to be voted ‘Fight of 2010’ come December, but has already been labelled perhaps the greatest fight of all time: the three-round featherweight war between Leonard Garcia and ‘the Korean Zombie’ Jung Chan Sung. Having already earned their reputations as two of the greatest warriors in the sport, Garcia and the Korean Zombie met in Sacramento, California, on April 24 and for 15 minutes put on a display of non-stop aggression and courage which left MMA fans worldwide ablaze with excitement. UFC Presents: Garcia vs Korean Zombie will be broadcast on Thursday July 1 at 12:30am and Friday July 4 at 3am.

The highlight of the Ultimate UFC Weekend is undoubtedly UFC 116: LESNAR v CARWIN, where 18stone 10lbs UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar collides with undefeated knockout machine Shane Carwin.

UFC UK Division president Marshall Zelaznik said: “Lesnar v Carwin is a gigantic fight, both in terms of fan excitement and in the sheer size of the two champions. We’re proud to work with our partners at ESPN to treat our fans to a unique weekend of action. We’re also proud to present the first-ever UK screening of the instant classic Leonard Garcia v ‘Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung. This is a simply breathtaking war and we’re very happy British fight fans are finally getting the chance to see it themselves.”

Jeroen Oerlemans, Vice-President TV Channels, ESPN EMEA said: “ESPN is delighted to be bringing the best in UFC action to UK sports fans this weekend. UFC 116 is all set to be one of the best fight cards on ESPN in recent times.”

Alex Reid Pulls Out Of Fight With Tom Watson

Tom “Kong” Watson sensationally announced on his  blog today that Alex Reid has pulled out their planned fight, apparently due to a knee injury. The MMA match up was due to take place at BAMMA on May 15th but now Reid’s pull out has left Watson without an opponent and according to Watson, seriously out of pocket.

Alex Reid vs Tom Waton BAMMA 3

Tom Watson has for several weeks being questioning Alex Reid’s dedication, training and whether or not he would actually take the fight. In fact Watson even make comments on his blog back on the 8th April regarding whether or not Reid would actually show up.  However Alex Reid’s continued promotional activities convinced all concerned in both Watsons camp and at the fight promoters BAMMA, that Reid intended to fight.

Reid had been complaining of knee problems several weeks ago but turned down offers by promoters BAMMA to have their Doctor examine his knee, insisting he would be fine. Alex Reid then apparently took a holiday to Egypt for a week just four weeks out from the fight.

“I found this very strange and questioned his intentions as did BAMMA” said Watson, “He then again told Bamma, CPL and Virgin Media he was going to fight”.

The announcement from Reid that he had to pull out due to a knee injury is at odds with a statement made by Watson on his blog which indicated that Reid’s lawyer had informed them that Alex Reid was simply not adequately prepared and as a result not fit enough to fight.

“I am so angry at the way he has disrespected me in his behaviour.  If Reid had pulled out 2 weeks earlier I would have been able to confirm Jeremy Horn so you can see the level of opponent I am looking for” said a clearly angry and frustrated Watson.

Tito Ortiz out of The Ultimate Fighter 11

UFC light heavyweight star Tito Ortiz has left The Ultimate Fighter 11 and will not be fighting his old nemesis Chuck Liddell. Ortiz has been replaced by another long time UFC veteran, Rich Franklin who will now face Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 in Vancouver.

Dana White and the UFC are remaining tight lipped about the reasons or manner of his sudden departure. Speculation concerning UFC stalwart Ortiz has been rife for a few weeks now with Dana White and the UFC being pretty mute on the subject of Ortiz and series 11 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Dana White was quoted as saying

“Fans and media have been asking me for weeks what is happening on The Ultimate Fighter Season 11, saying things like ‘is Tito off the show, is Chuck fighting Rich?’ Today, I’m officially announcing that Chuck Liddell will fight Rich Franklin at UFC 115.  I wish I could tell you why, but everyone’s just going to have to watch The Ultimate Fighter Season 11 on Spike TV.

What I can say is that these are two UFC legends, and they give everything they have in every second of a fight. Both of these guys are looking to get back to the top of the light heavyweight division.  Liddell and Franklin at 205 pounds is going to be a war, and I can’t wait to do our first UFC event ever in Vancouver.”

Tickets sales for the Vancouver UFC event UFC 115 sold out in just 30 mins the fastest sales for a UFC in history.

UFC 115 in Vancouver sold out in just 30 minutes in a pre-sale Tuesday, two days before tickets were scheduled to go on sale to the general public.

UFC president Dana White broke the news via Twitter.

“Vancouver sold out in 30 mins!!!! Thank you Vancouver we worked hard on getting it there. Thank you Mayor Robertson.”

The tickets all sold out via the UFC’s FightClub and didn’t even make it on sale to the general public.
